Shared drive missing
A drive letter is a shortcut, not the data. Who is affected tells you what broke.A drive letter is a shortcut, not the data. When it vanishes, the files are almost always exactly where they were, and what has broken is the connection between this person's computer and the place they are stored.
Who is affected tells you where to look
- One person, one computer: the mapping or their sign-in.
- One person everywhere: their account or group membership.
- Everyone in the office: the server, the network or power.
- Everyone remotely: the connection into the office.
- Everyone, everywhere: the storage itself. Treat this one as urgent and report it straight away.
Establish the scope before touching anything
We check whether the storage is reachable at all, then the account, the permissions, the mapping and how it is applied, in the order the pattern points to.
Please do not recreate the mapping by hand as a workaround and then carry on. It usually works, it hides whichever of the five cases above is actually true, and it leaves one computer configured differently from every other. The next person to look at this will be told everything is fine, and the thing that broke will still be broken, quietly, for everybody who hasn't complained yet.
