Email bouncing
A bounce explains itself if anyone reads it, and the answer is often nothing to do with your mailbox.A bounce is one of the few problems that explains itself, if anyone reads it. The rejection message names who refused the mail and usually why, and the answer is often nothing to do with your mailbox at all.
What you may notice
- One recipient bounces while everyone else is fine.
- Mail to a whole domain stops being accepted.
- A message returns hours later rather than immediately.
- Replies work but new messages don't.
- It began after a website or domain change.
Read the rejection, then check who holds the domain
We look at the bounce message, the recipient's mail service, your own sending configuration and the records published for your domain.
That last one is where this often ends. It is rarely with us. Domain records are frequently held by whoever built the website, a registrar set up years ago, or a marketing platform given permission to send as you. Knowing who controls that, and having an account you can actually sign into, is worth establishing on a day when your mail is working.
