Ageing server replacement

The hardware rarely forces the decision. Somebody else's support schedule does.

Servers usually keep running long past the point where they should be replaced, which is why the hardware is rarely what forces the decision. What forces it is somebody else's support schedule: an operating system reaching its end date, or a business application whose vendor stops supporting the version you are on.

What sets the deadline

  • An operating system end-of-support date.
  • The versions your critical application vendor still supports.
  • Whether replacement parts are still available.
  • Warranty or support cover that has already lapsed.
  • A compliance or insurance expectation about supported software.

Work backwards from the date somebody else set

We establish what the server does, what depends on it, what your application vendors support and what the realistic options are: replace it, move the workload or retire it because something else now does the job.

Those dates are published years in advance and are the one part of this nobody can negotiate. A replacement planned before the support deadline is a purchase; the same replacement left until that deadline is an emergency with whatever hardware is in stock. We'd rather raise it early and be told you already know than mention it the first time something breaks.
